Training Service Dogs

Saturday, October 11 - 10:00 AM CST

What does it take to train service and therapy dogs? Is this something you've ever considered?

We'll talk with Kathy Diamond Davis, dog trainer and author of "Therapy Dogs: Training Your Dog to Reach Others" about how to train your dog to be a therapy dog.

Then we'll talk with Collette Palmer of Freedom Service Dogs, who takes dogs from shelters and trains them to be service dogs for the disabled.

Find out how service dogs are trained, what kind of dogs are good candidates for service dogs (you might be surprised) and how you can get involved.  www.freedomservicedogs.org

An interesting note from the interview was this clarification between service dogs and therapy dogs. Service dogs are dogs who assist persons with disabilities, and may provide assistance in police and military situations. Therapy dogs are not service dogs. They provide emotional benefits to people. They generally visit a home or health care facility with their owners to provide help with specific tasks such as reading, or with focus, mood and other needs. Service dogs are typically granted access to public places. Therapy dogs are not given access to as many public places as service dogs.
