Dog Park Etiquette

Saturday, August 2 - 10:00 AM CST

Dog parks are everywhere these days, and thank goodness! The city of

Houston alone has 11 dog parks. New York has over 40.

If you're a frequent visitor to a dog park in your area, you'll enjoy this episode. We'll talk with Kim Pearson, author of "Dog Park Diary: the social Round of Goody Beagle." We'll also swap stories of funny things that have happened at the dog park, and share a chuckle about the characters you meet at the dog park:

  • the weird lady who runs around with a water bottle, spraying any dog who comes near hers

  • the tattle-tale who tells everyone when their dog has made a mess that needs to be cleaned up

  • the oblivious owner who never sees his dog do anything

  • the nervous Nellie who holds her little dog in her arms, turning the poor thing into bait.

You know them. You love them. Maybe you are them. Have we missed any? Call and share! Let's have a laugh and get some advice about how to get along well with others at the dog park.

Plus, we'll also be talking to the founder of Pooch Pacers, a dog-jogging service in L.A. What's that? You'll find out on Saturday morning.

Tips for Dog Park Fun & Safety

  • First-timers should come at an off-peak time - dusk, weekdays, early mornings.

  • Upon entering the main field, move away from the entrance area and away from the fence. This will help disperse any dogs that will want to welcome your dog to the park.
Distract your dog when others enter the park so that he does not "rush" the newcomers.

  • Supervise your dog (do not read a book or talk on your cell phone).

  • Use small dog and big dog areas according to the size of your dog.

  • Pick up after your dog, and pick up "orphaned" piles. Other people may be picking up yours.

  • Teach children how to be calm in a dog park.
