Training Your Small Dog

Join us as we talk to Kelly Stafford, the Texas inventor of our favorite new dog toy, the Doggy Tug. To win one, email your name, address and your dog's size or breed, and Kelly will ship one to you (while supplies last). Email lisa@luckydogshow.com.

Then we catch up with Kare Romanski and find out how her weekend-long lost-dog project is going in North Carolina. Click here to listen to the episode where she explains why more dogs run away on July 4th than any other day of the year.

For our main segment, we talk to Oregon author and small-dog owner Deborah Wood about the special challenges facing owners of small dogs when trying to housebreak and train these little dynamos.

Here are some key points from the show:

  • Little dogs are different because of size; normal training techniques may not work with tiny dogs.

  • Small dogs are getting more popular, but they have training challenges

  • Don't miss the discussion about "armpit piranha syndrome"

  • Little dogs don't act like big dogs, they act like little dogs. When small dogs show aggression, it's often because they know they're smaller than other dogs, children, etc., so they think that the best offense is a good defense.

  • Put the dog on the floor. Let him/her be a dog. Too much lap time can cause problems.

  • People often have a harder time housebreaking little dogs for two reasons. 1) They have smaller bladders. 2) They have a different concept of space (a living room looks a lot bigger to them).

  • Other people might have got their dogs for protection, but little dogs get you for protection. Watch children, other dogs and any social interactions for signs of stress in your dog. But don't isolate him/her from socializing with others.

  • Give your dog time on the ground to be a dog. Don't carry or hold your dog too much. Incorporate daily walks like you would with any other dog.
