Trendspotter Segment:

Signs of heat exhaustion in dogs:

Heavy panting

hyperventilation (deep breathing)

increased salivation early

dry gums as the heat prostration progresses

weakness & stumbling

confusion or inattention

vomiting or diarrhea and sometimes bleeding

As the condition progresses towards heat prostration or heat stroke there may be obvious paleness or graying to the gums, shallowing of the breathing efforts and eventually slowed or absent breathing efforts, vomiting and diarrhea that may be bloody and finally seizures or coma.

Temperatures above 105 degrees Fahrenheit are dangerous, if you have a way of taking your dog's temperature. Most people don't carry around thermometers with them and the physical signs are usually enough to go by.

Allow your dog to acclimatize to hot weather before playing or exercising on a hot day. Provide plenty of rest periods, even if your dog doesn't want them. Provide plenty of opportunities to drink fresh water (not cold water). Provide shade or bring your dog into the air conditioning if he or she exhibits the signs at the top of the list above. If your dog has signs at the bottom of the list, run a hose over him and apply cool packs or ice to armpit, neck and tummy areas. If ice is not available, fan him with air while you run a hose over him.

Don't assume that if your dog is swimming in water that he/she won't overheat.
