Joint Supplements for Dogs

March 8, 2008

Let's take a look at joint care ingredients offered in supplements and treats for dogs. What's Glucosamine, anyway? What does it do? What are Hyaluronic Acids? Chondroitin Sulfates? How much is enough for your dog? Which dogs need joint supplementation? Do herbs do just as well? We'll talk to experts to find out how to decode the joint care products on the market today and figure out which one (if any) is best for your dog.

Definitions:

  • Glucosamine - also known as glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, N-acetyl glucosamine and chitosamine, it is a compound found naturally in the body. It is needed to produce glycosaminoglycan, a molecule used in the formation and repair of cartilate and other body tissues. Production of glucosamine slows with age.

  • Hyaluronic Acid - a natural component of connective tissue whose function is to cushion and lubricate. It can also be taken in food and supplement form to treat osteoarthritis and joint instability.

  • MSM - methyl sulfonyl methane, a compound found naturally in foods such as cow's milk, meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables. MSM is thought to work by contributing sulfur, which is believed to strengthen collagen. More study is ongoing.

  • Chondroitin Sulfate - Part of a large protein molecule that gives cartilage elasticity. Used as a nonprescription supplement for arresting (or possibly reversing) the degenerative process of osteoarthritis with its common partner agent, glucosamine. Chondroitin sulfate is a major component of cartilage and gives much of the resistance of cartilage to compression. Loss of chondroitin sulfate from the cartilage is a major cause of osteoarthritis.

  • Bioflavinal - Most often extracted from grape seeds, it is believed to be the strongest antioxidant discovered to date, helping joints to stay flexible.

  • Silicon

When does a dog need a joint supplement?

One in four dogs in the USA will develop joint problems, according to some estimates. That means that as many as 18.7 million dogs could benefit from joint supplements or remedies. Dogs are living longer, thanks to advances in veterinary medicine and surgery. But as they age, like us, their bodies are less able to produce the natural substances required to keep joints cushioned and lubricated.

Some breeds, such as German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers, are especially prone to joint problems, as are giant breeds and many of the other large breeds. Active dogs suffer more joint wear and tear. Dogs who have sustained injuries or who have undergone orthopedic procedures may benefit from supplementation, too. (Source: Pet Age, January 2008)

Dosages

Ingredient dosages can vary widely. A recent comparison of popular supplements and treats showed Glucosamine dosages varying from 100 mg to 16,000 mg, and chondroitin sulfate varying from 50 mg to 3,330 mg. So what's the best dosage? Depending on whether you're after a preventive or a therapeutic action, you'll probably want a dosage of 500-1,500 mg per serving (depending on the size of the dog) for prevention, and around 3,000 mg for dogs with diagnosed joint problems.

Some joint ingredients are still under study to determine their effectiveness, however anecdotal evidence suggests they may be helpful. In a 2006 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine , the popular dietary supplement combination of glucosamine plus chondroitin sulfate did not provide significant relief from osteoarthritis pain among all participants. However, a smaller subgroup of study participants with moderate-to-severe pain showed significant relief with the combined supplements. This four-year study, known as the Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), was conducted with 1,600 human participants with documented osteoarthritis of the knee, by the National Institutes of Health.
