Get Your Dog Groomer Ready

January 25, 2008

As a dog owner, it's your responsibility to get your dog comfortable with going to the groomer if yours is one of those dogs who needs professional grooming. Some dogs just hate being bathed and groomed, and the noisy chaos of a grooming shop -- the dryers, other dogs and bustling energy -- can make things even worse. What can you do? We'll give you some ways you can help your dog be cooperative and comfortable at the groomer's.

Why dogs get bad attitude about going to the groomer

  • bad experience

  • personality/natural excitability or suspiciousness

  • no reason at all

  • nervousness on the part of the owner or groomer

Desensitization

Puppies:

  • Introduce to the sound of clippers

  • Handle ears

  • Handle feet and nails

  • Play with them in the bath

  • Bring to grooming shop as early as 6-8 weeks and have the groomer take the dog out of your presence

Older Dogs:

  • Run clippers during meal time or treat time

  • Handle ears and feet

  • Put on a table and brush

  • Take breaks to play and go out for a quick walk

  • Bring a blanket or toy from home

  • Socialize

More Tips:

  • Tell groomer about problems and concerns

  • Switch groomers if you have a persistent problem or the groomer will not listen to your concerns

  • Don't ask to watch or be present - it creates conflict, not comfort, for your dog and makes it harder for everyone

Don't avoid grooming. It can uncover health problems such as tumors, loose teeth and skin conditions. Overlong nails can create difficulties walking. Mats can pull the skin.
